Cleaning Up a Busy Warehouse
Cleaning up a busy warehouse can be quite a challenge, as with so much going on in there anyway, it can be hard to find a way to also incorporate some proper cleaning. The following looks at some of the ways you can go about it.
When it’s not busy
The hardest part about cleaning up a busy warehouse is always going to be the fact that it is so busy and has so much going on, so if at all possible, do your cleaning when there is a little less going on. Whether you clean at night, on days that are quieter, or if you shut down the warehouse and bring in commercial cleaners, find a way to minimise the amount of business you will need to be cleaning around. Commercial cleaning services are well worth the investment if you can find a window of time for them to get in there when it’s not busy.
Give everyone a job
A warehouse is a big place that is going to take a lot to clean, so your best approach is to break down all of the cleaning tasks that need to be done, and give everyone a task. It shouldn’t be hard for your workers to have their own areas clean, and if some parts of the warehouse aren’t quite as busy as others at any point in time, perhaps they could get involved in cleaning a few other areas as well.
One area at a time
Trying to clean everything at once can end up with nothing being cleaned properly, so instead, tackle one area at a time. This way you might even be able to move some things out of the way and store them in other parts of the warehouse while you are cleaning, which is sure to make your life significantly easier. It will also be easier to get a sense of the job getting done by going through and cleaning your warehouse area by area.
Keep track of who cleans what
When you are trying to clean a busy warehouse that has a lot of people, it can be difficult to keep track of who is doing what, and therefore some areas of the warehouse may not be quite as well cleaned as you’d like. Having a system where people put their name to a task to say that they have completed it will give a lot more accountability, as most people tend to do a better job in this scenario.
Use safety gear
Your workers should always use any safety gear related to their job, especially when cleaning in a busy warehouse. Workers are also more likely to come rushing around a corner and bump into a cleaning crew they weren’t expecting, so make sure to use lots of signs and indications of where people should be watching out. This is important when cleaning anywhere, but even more so when the location is busy.
Once you have cleaned your busy warehouse, make sure it stays clean by enforcing regular mini-clean-ups at the end of each shift.
